〈슬럼로드 밀리어네어는〉 평범한 세입자들과 거대 부동산 개발업자 간의 다윗과 골리앗 싸움을 담아내며 뉴욕시의 주거 불평등 문제를 파헤친다. 뉴욕 전역의 다양한 지역사회 사례를 통해 열악한 주거 환경, 비윤리적 임대인, 과부화 된 주택 법원 제도의 현실을 보여준다. 나아가 저소득층 지역 내의 요지가 고급 주택화를 목적으로 수탈되는 불편한 패턴을 드러내며 그 과정에서 줄곧 제도적 공모가 있음을 적발한다. 끊임없는 젠트리피케이션에 맞서 싸우는 시민운동을 조명하는 냉철 하면서도 용기를 북돋우는 작품.

뉴욕 거주자의 69%가 임대로 살고 있는 현실에서 맨해튼 평균 임대료가 월 5,000달러 내외라면 도대체 뉴욕 시민들은 한 달에 얼마를 벌어야 할까? 부동산 가격 상승은 비단 한국만의 고질적 문제는 아닐 것이다. 의식주는 인간 삶의 가장 기본적인 요소이지만 대도시 주거 형편은 매년 악화하고 있다. 영화는 대도시 주거비 상승의 주요 원인인 자산가들의 이해관계에 의해 악순환의 고리가 계속되는 점에 주목한다. 이민자들이 많이 사는 '부동산 도시' 뉴욕의 사례를 다루고 있음에도 서울이나 도쿄에 거주하는 사람들도 쉽게 공감할 수 있을 정도로 부동산 문제를 기민하고 공정한 시선으로 접근하는 영화다. 아메리칸 POV, CNN 등 공익적 성향의 매체에서 일한 경험이 있는, 한국에도 잘 알려진 프로듀서 니콜 시엔이 제작을 맡았다. With 69% of New York residents renting houses and the average rent in Manhattan hovering around $5,000, how much do New Yorkers need to make a month? Korea is not the only one with the chronic problem of rising real estate prices. Housing, along with food and clothing, is a fundamental human need. Yet in major cities, living conditions continue to worsen year after year. This film focuses on the vicious cycle driven by the vested interests of wealthy property owners, identifying them as key contributors to rising urban housing costs. While it centers on New York—a "real estate city" and home to many immigrants—its acute, balanced lens on housing injustice easily resonates with residents of Seoul or Tokyo.
